Key takeaways

  • A nurse resume is read for three things first: your qualification, your State Nursing Council registration and the unit and bed strength where you worked. Put all three on page one.
  • The Indian Nursing Council says plainly that the RN/RM number from the State Nursing Registration Council is the legal licence to practise. The INC enrolment number (NUID) is not a licence. Write the council number, not just the NUID.
  • Government and overseas applications ask for documents, not just a resume. The AIIMS NORCET advertisement we read lists registration and experience certificates; the UAE health regulators ask for a valid home-country licence, a good standing certificate and an exam; the UK NMC asks for a Test of Competence and an English test.
  • Freshers should lead with clinical rotations and internship. Experienced nurses should lead with unit, bed strength, patient type and what you handled, and never invent a patient load.
  • Never put patient names or hospital numbers on a resume. Both the INC code of ethics and the UK NMC Code treat patient privacy as a duty.

Most pages for “nurse resume format” are Scribd uploads and Pinterest boards that give you a layout without saying what a hospital HR desk or a regulator actually checks. This guide starts from what the councils, an AIIMS recruitment advertisement and overseas regulators publish, then gives you copy-ready samples and a free checklist to test your own resume.

What a nurse resume needs that other resumes do not

A software resume is judged on projects. A nurse resume is judged first on whether you are legally allowed to practise, then on where and on whom. Three things set it apart.

  1. A council registration line. Without it, many employers cannot shortlist you at all. The AIIMS NORCET advertisement we read makes registration as a nurse and midwife with the State or Indian Nursing Council an essential condition.
  2. Clinical context. “Staff nurse” could mean a 20-bed ward or a 12-bed ICU. Hospital size, unit and patient type tell the reader what you actually did.
  3. Verifiable paperwork. Nursing hiring runs on certificates: degree or diploma, council registration, experience letters, BLS cards. The resume should match them exactly.

How to show your registration: State Nursing Council, INC and NUID

The Indian Nursing Council (INC) describes itself as an autonomous body under the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, constituted under the Indian Nursing Council Act, 1947, to set a uniform standard of nurse training. It also runs the Nurses Registration & Tracking System (NRTS), which it calls a live register of nurses.

INC’s own NRTS FAQ is clear about who does what:

- The enrolment under NRTS is neither a licence nor a registration given by INC.
- State Nursing Registration Councils (SNRCs) register nurses and give the licence to practise. INC states that the RN/RM number from the SNRC is the legal licence.
- Each registered nurse also gets a NUID (Nurse Unique Identity Number) in NRTS.
- Renewal of licence is done by the state council.

The NRTS leaflet on INC’s site also says renewal is once in five years, linked to 150 hours of continuing nursing education (CNE). Check your own council’s current rule, because renewal is handled state by state.

Section order for a nurse resume

Hospital HR reads fast and checks facts against your documents. This order works for both private and government applications.

One page or two?

We found no official rule on length. Our advice: one page for a fresher or under 3 years, two pages at most if you have several hospitals, a specialty unit and certifications. Cut anything that is not about nursing.

Photo and declaration

We found no official requirement for either. Many Indian nursing resumes carry a passport photo and a closing “I hereby declare that the above is true” line, because some government and private forms ask for them. Where an application form or advertisement asks, follow it. For a resume uploaded to a hospital portal or sent abroad, a photo is usually unnecessary, and a declaration adds nothing a signed application does not. When in doubt, read what the employer asked for.

What to write under experience: unit, bed strength and duties

The AIIMS NORCET advertisement counts experience in a hospital of at least 50 beds, so for government posts the reader needs the bed strength to check. Even for private hospitals it tells the reader your scale. Write it in the hospital line.

one job entry
Staff Nurse, Medical ICU
Example Multispeciality Hospital, Pune (350 beds; 12-bed MICU)
June 2022 to present
- Cared for adult patients on ventilator and non-invasive ventilation support under physician orders
- Monitored vitals and charted hourly on the unit’s chart; escalated changes to the duty doctor
- Gave IV medication and managed infusion pumps per hospital protocol
- Handed over shifts to the incoming nurse using the unit’s handover format
- Took part in infection-control audits for the unit

Rules that keep it honest:

  • Bed strength and unit size only if you know them. Ask the nursing office or check the hospital’s own website. Never guess.
  • Patient load or ratio (for example “1:2 in ICU”) only if it was your real assignment. Say “typically” if it varied.
  • Verbs first: monitored, administered, assisted, documented, escalated, educated. Avoid “responsible for”.
  • Specific scope: adult, paediatric, neonatal, surgical, medical, obstetric.
  • Numbers you can defend: ward size, shifts, number of staff you supervised. If you do not know, leave the number out.

Skills and certifications to list

List skills you perform in your current unit. The examples below are generic; delete any you do not do.

UnitExample skills
Medical-surgical wardIV cannulation, medication administration, wound dressing, catheter care, vital signs, patient education
ICU / HDUVentilator care, ABG sampling support, central line care, infusion pumps, hemodynamic monitoring, sedation scoring
Operation theatreScrub nurse role, counts, sterile technique, positioning, instrument handling
EmergencyTriage, CPR, trauma assessment, ECG, emergency medications
Labour room / maternityFetal monitoring, labour support, newborn care, partograph
DialysisHaemodialysis set-up, vascular access care, machine monitoring
Generic examples only, to show how specific to be. Keep only what you actually do. This is editorial, not an official skills list.

Certificates: BLS, ACLS and others

The American Heart Association describes its BLS Provider course as designed for healthcare professionals and trained first responders, and says the course completion card is valid for two years, through the end of the month it was issued. So write the issuing body, course and year, and set a reminder to renew. An expired card on a resume hurts you.

The UAE unified requirements document (2022 version, hosted by DHA) says nurses and midwives must hold at least a valid BLS certification, or others according to their scope. Advanced courses such as ACLS or PALS are asked for specific titles in that document. Check the one for your job.

Government job vs private hospital vs abroad: what changes

The resume is the same document, with different emphasis. The paperwork behind it differs a lot.

RouteWhat the source asksWhat to stress on the resume
Government (AIIMS NORCET)B.Sc Nursing, or GNM with 2 years in a hospital of at least 50 beds; registration as Nurse and Midwife with State or Indian Nursing Council; documents include registration and any experience certificateQualification, council registration, hospital bed strength, exact dates
Private hospitalWe did not find a single standard; each hospital advertises its ownUnit, patient type, certificates, notice period, shift flexibility
UAE (DHA, DOH, MOHAP, SHA)Valid licence or registration in your home country; good standing certificate; primary source verification; the authorities’ exam; at least valid BLSRegistration with number and validity, clear dated experience with each employer, BLS
UK (NMC)Test of Competence, CBT and OSCE, for qualifications that need it; English test scoresClinical areas, patient type, English-language evidence, dated registration
Sources: AIIMS NORCET-6 advertisement; UAE Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements, 2022, hosted by DHA; NMC pages for nurses trained outside the UK. All read 6 Oct 2026. Check the current notification or regulator page before you apply.

Government posts

The NORCET advertisement counts the two years of experience only after you finish the course, get the result and register, and says the experience must be from a hospital with at least 50 beds. It asks for an experience certificate with the application. Write your dates month-by-month so the resume matches that certificate. Government posts often use their own form; use the resume to prepare the facts.

UAE

The 2022 unified requirements document, hosted by DHA, states that applicants must hold a valid licence or registration to practise in their home country or country of last employment, provide a good standing certificate, have documents verified directly from the original source, and pass the authorities’ examination (three attempts across the authorities). Experience must be relevant to the title applied for. Make your experience entries easy to match against employer letters. A newer manual version exists on DHA’s site, so check the current one before applying.

UK

The NMC says the Test of Competence has two parts, a multiple-choice computer-based test (CBT) and a practical OSCE, to be passed within two years of each other and then valid for five years. The CBT can be taken anywhere in the world; the OSCE is taken in the UK. For English, the NMC accepts IELTS Academic (at least 7 in reading, listening and speaking and 6.5 in writing) or OET (at least grade B in reading, listening and speaking and C+ in writing), valid for two years from the test date. A nursing qualification taught and examined in English, or recent practice in a majority English-speaking country, can also count. We did not research other countries, and we did not verify Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Canada, Australia or NCLEX. Use each regulator’s own page.

ATS keywords for hospital HR

Large hospital groups and recruitment agencies often use an applicant tracking system (ATS) or portal search to filter resumes. We could not find a published list of what any hospital group screens for, so the rule is simple: use the words in the job advertisement, spelled as they are written.

  • Role title as advertised: Staff Nurse, Nursing Officer, ICU Nurse, OT Nurse, Staff Nurse (GNM).
  • Qualification as advertised: B.Sc Nursing, GNM, M.Sc Nursing, with the awarding body.
  • Registration: “Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife”, council name and number.
  • Unit and setting: ICU, NICU, HDU, emergency, OT, dialysis, medical ward, labour room.
  • Certificates by name: BLS, ACLS, PALS, infection control training.
  • Equipment and procedures you really use, named as the advertisement names them.

Keep the resume as plain text in a simple layout. Tables, text boxes and images can scramble when a system reads the file. Our ATS checker shows how a resume parses.

Common nurse resume mistakes

  • No council registration. The line that decides whether you can practise is missing or buried on page two.
  • NUID presented as the licence. INC’s FAQ says NRTS enrolment is not a licence or registration.
  • Vague duties. “Patient care” and “assisted doctors” could describe anyone. Name the unit, patients and tasks.
  • Invented bed strength or patient load. HR and overseas verification check hospital and employer letters.
  • Dates that do not match your experience certificate. Government and overseas processes compare them.
  • Expired certificates listed as current. A BLS card is valid two years.
  • Patient names or case details. A privacy breach on paper.
  • A skills list copied from the internet. Every item is a possible interview question.
  • An unexplained gap. One line (study, caregiving, relocation) is enough.
  • A photo-heavy, coloured or table-based layout that reads badly on a portal or phone.

Nurse resume FAQs

What is the best nurse resume format in India?

A one-column, plain layout with the registration line in the header, then summary, experience or clinical training, education, certificates and skills. There is no official national format. Put the registration, unit and bed strength where they can be found in seconds.

Should I write my nursing council registration number on my resume?

Yes. INC states that the RN/RM number from the State Nursing Registration Council is the legal licence to practise, and the NORCET advertisement makes registration an essential condition. Write the council name, number and year.

Is NUID the same as my nursing registration number?

No. INC’s FAQ says NRTS enrolment is neither a licence nor a registration given by INC. The SNRC issues the registration; the NUID is an identity number created in NRTS.

What should a fresher nurse put on a resume?

Education first, then clinical internship and postings, with units, patient types and tasks done under supervision. Add BLS if you have it, and say honestly if your council registration is still awaited.

One page or two pages for a nurse resume?

We found no official rule. One page suits a fresher or a nurse with under 3 years of experience; two pages at most suit several hospitals and specialty certificates.

Do I need a photo or declaration on a nurse resume?

We found no official requirement. Add them if the advertisement or application form asks. For online portals and overseas applications they are usually not needed.

Which certifications should a nurse list?

BLS first, because the AHA course is aimed at healthcare professionals and the UAE requirements document asks nurses for at least valid BLS. Add ACLS, PALS or others only if you hold them, with the issuing body and year.

What does the UK NMC ask from Indian nurses?

The NMC asks nurses trained outside the UK to pass a Test of Competence, a computer-based test and an OSCE, and to meet English language scores such as IELTS Academic 7 in reading, listening and speaking and 6.5 in writing, or the OET equivalent. Check the NMC page for the current rules.
