Position SummaryWe are seeking an experienced and strategic technology leader to serve as Vice President, Accounting Systems Development, responsible for driving the design, development, modernization, and operational excellence of enterprise accounting platforms and financial technology solutions.This role will lead multiple engineering teams supporting core accounting functions including General Ledger (GL), Sub-Ledger, Financial Reporting, Regulatory Reporting, Reconciliation, Close & Consolidation, and Financial Controls. The successful candidate will partner closely with Product, Architecture, , and Operations teams to deliver scalable, secure, and compliant solutions that support business growth and regulatory requirements.The ideal candidate combines deep software engineering expertise, strong accounting domain knowledge, and proven experience leading large global technology organizations.Key ResponsibilitiesTechnology LeadershipDefine and execute the technology strategy for enterprise accounting systems.Lead modernization initiatives including cloud migration, API enablement, event-driven architecture, and platform engineering transformation.Design highly available, scalable, and resilient financial systems supporting mission-critical accounting operations.Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture, security, risk management, and compliance standards.Drive adoption of AI-assisted software development, engineering productivity tools, and automation capabilities.Product & Business PartnershipTranslate accounting and regulatory requirements into scalable technology solutions.Lead strategic initiatives involving General Ledger platforms, sub-ledger architectures, financial close processes, accounting rules engines, regulatory reporting, and data governance and controls.Serve as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders on technology investments and transformation opportunities.Engineering ExcellenceLead multiple Agile engineering teams across development, QA, DevOps, and production support functions.Establish engineering best practices covering software architecture, secure coding, DevSecOps, test automation, observability, and performance engineering.Improve engineering effectiveness through metrics such as DORA, reliability KPIs, and operational health measurements.Promote software quality, resilience, and operational excellence.People LeadershipBuild and retain high-performing global engineering teams.Mentor Engineering Managers, Architects, Technical Leads, and Senior Developers.Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, continuous learning, and inclusion.Lead workforce planning, talent development, succession planning, and organizational growth initiatives.Required QualificationsEducationBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.Master’s degree is a plus.Experience15+ years of software engineering experience.8+ years of people leadership experience managing managers and senior technical leaders.Proven experience leading large-scale enterprise financial or accounting application development teams.Experience supporting accounting functions within financial services, banking, asset management, insurance, or large multinational organizations.Demonstrated success delivering complex modernization and transformation programs.Technical ExpertiseStrong experience in one or more of the following:Java / Spring Boot .NET Core / C#PythonReact / AngularREST APIs and MicroservicesEvent-driven architecturesCloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQLData Warehousing and Data Lake solutionsCI/CD and DevOps practicesAccounting Domain KnowledgeStrong understanding of:General Ledger processesSub-ledger accountingFinancial reportingMonth-end and year-end closeReconciliation workflowsAccounting controlsRegulatory reporting requirementsFinancial data governanceExperience with platforms such as SAP, Oracle Financials, Workday Financials, BlackLine, or similar solutions is highly desirable.Preferred QualificationsCPA, CMA, CFA, or equivalent finance/accounting certification.Experience leading globally distributed engineering organizations.Experience in cloud-native financial platform modernization.Knowledge of AI, machine learning, and GenAI applications within finance technology.Strong understanding of SOX controls, audit requirements, and operational risk management.Leadership Competencies✓ Strategic Thinking✓ Influencing Without Authority✓ Executive Stakeholder Management✓ Data-Driven Decision Making✓ Technology Vision✓ Operational Excellence✓ Talent Development✓ Customer Focus✓ Change Leadership✓ Innovation MindsetSuccess Measures: First 12 MonthsDelivery of strategic accounting platform modernization roadmap.Improvement in engineering productivity and release quality.Reduction in production incidents and operational risk.Enhanced system scalability, resiliency, and regulatory compliance.Increased stakeholder satisfaction across Finance and Technology organizations.Development of a strong leadership pipeline and high-performing engineering culture.About State StreetAcross the globe, institutional investors rely on us to help them manage risk, respond to challenges, and drive performance and profitability.
